"My Journey Closer to the Lord"
    (My Washington, D.C. Trip)
                                  by Courtney DeLong

My brother got on the bus, and I was on my way. I was on my way to what
I thought would be a bunch of learning, and spending time with a bunch
of crabby retired teachers. Boy was I wrong. Not only did I change my
perspective on what I thought was “boring politics”, by learning about
the many great stories of past presidents, and American heroes.

I made life changing friendships with people from all over the country. I
learned more about myself then I probably ever will, and I became more
outgoing. But the biggest thing about my trip was not what I learned
about politics, the law, and the cultures that my new friends came from.  It
was not about the new friends I made, and the awesome tour guide I had.
It was the way I grew in Christ.

I was never really close to our awesome God. I never really saw him for
what, and who he is. I didn’t really know the truth about how mighty and
powerful he was. I had learned many interesting things at camp, but
nothing that changed my life this much. On our spare time, my friend,
Grace, and I taught each other about our favorite bible stories, and verses
that we knew, that the other didn’t know already. I had so much fun
looking up new verses to highlight in my bible with her at 10 o’clock at
night, when we were waiting for bed check.

My roommates and I ended up praying together before we went to bed.
We all grew in Christ together. Lucky for me Grace went to a private
Christian school, so I ended up learning more then she did. I grew so
much closer to our amazing God, and am still the same way now. I can sit
down and just read a whole book of the bible, while highlighting my
favorite verses, for fun. I never thought I would learn so much that week I
spent in Washington D.C. with complete strangers. It was like I was
reconnected with the Lord, and I thank my parents for sending me, and
my group of friends for helping me strengthen my relationship with God.

Here is a lesson for all of you out there. Complete strangers can teach
you the most life changing things. Also give new people a welcoming
smile, and love everyone. It’s what God wants. Love your enemies, they
will change your life someday… in a good way.
Just trust me on that one. God Bless all of you!!!!!!!!!
